The Pet Protector System

"If I Need Help ... "

From , former About.com Guide

" ... Call 1-800-HELP-4-PETS"

What it is :

  • A plastic-coated collar tag
  • A 1-800, toll-free phone number
  • 24-hour service available throughout North America
  • Peace of mind

Throughout the United States and Canada, hundreds of dogs are lost, or stolen every year. The lucky ones are recovered fairly quickly, from shelters or a kind soul who's found them, the unlucky ones are left languishing in shelters, far from home or suffer worse fates in accidents. Sometimes, a lucky one finds a new home, and while he's safe and sound, his original family is left to wonder what happened.

The Pet Protector System is a hotline available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from one end of the continent to the other. No matter where you have lost your dog, or where he ends up, or who finds him, his chances of being returned to your side are much better if a rescuer or shelter worker isn't left guessing where he came from, or if he has a microchip under his skin. Not all shelters or pounds have microchip scanners, and someonly work with one brand of microchip.

Each identification tag is emblazoned with an easy-to-see toll free phone number, and a unique idengtification number that is assigned to your pet.  If your dog is located and you aren't home, an operator will contact a selected individual who can retrieve your pet, or, in case of emergency care, authourize veterinary treatment, and locate the nearest veterinarian for your dog's rescuer.

How to Use it :

  • Activate your tag by calling the toll-free number, and/or filling out the information form provided.
  • If you so desire, you can have your credit card number available for emergencies and veterinary care.
  • If you find a dog with the Pet Protector ID tag, call the toll-free number to have the owner located.

You can specify your pet's medical conditions if he has any, any medication that is needed, authourize treatment if needed and have alternate contacts availble in case you are travelling and can not be reached by phone.

My Personal Take on the Pet Protector System

I like it. It's one of the few available services to Canada and it's very obvious. Living in a fairly remotely populated area like I do, I feel the lack of microchip scanners available, and if there isn't a very easily noticed identification of some sort on your dog, most shelter workers tend to just give up. And it's easily affordable peace of mind.
