History
Recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1975, the Staffordshire's history dates much further back, all the way to 1700's. Resulting from various crosses of Bulldogs and Terriers, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier took his name from his ancestors and an area where it's popularity was great.
Bred for fighting and bull-baiting, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has outgrown his history to become a popular and stable family pet today.
About the Staffordshire Bull Terrier :
A small dog of 13 to 16 inches, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier should never weigh more than 40 pounds. His compact body is heavily muscled and presents a pleasing picture, not too wide, and not narrow. His coat comes in the acceptable colours of fawn, white, red, black, any shade of brindle, blue, with or without white.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier's head and face are by far the most striking of his features. His broad head and contemplative expression give this dog a serious look, hiding his playful nature.
Affectionately called "The Nanny Dog" in England, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier belies the reputation given to him by those who are unfamiliar with him, and is a trustworthy companion to children and adults alike. True to Terrier nature, however, he can be stubborn at times and requires firm, but loving handling to prevent him from taking over the home.
