Did You Know?
The American Cocker Spaniel, bred from English Cocking Spaniels, was originally bred to be a true gun dog like it's ancestors, and is the smallest sporting breed available. Despite his small size, the American Cocker Spaniel still holds all his sporting instincts close, and often these traits are mis-read, mishandled and generally left unused as people tend to look at these dogs as companion breeds, rather than sporting breeds.

Like all true gun dogs, the American Cocker Spaniel is best in a home with a family who understands his nature, and is prepared to deal with an intelligent, and independant thinking dog. These dogs are not recommended as a child's pet.
About Sporting Breeds in General:
The gun dog is the hunter's best friend. Bred to retrieve game, flush out prey, and in some cases even bring down game themselves, gun dogs are ideal hunting companions.
Multi-purpose dogs, some of the popular breeds have been drafted into service over the years. Labradors and Golden Retrievers have become excellent guide dogs for the blind, and the superb hearing ability of some breeds make them the ideal choice for assistance dogs to the hearing impaired. Many fit into the family pet category.

While most of the gun dog breeds will fulfill any role you desire, some, such as the Karelian Bear Dog do not fit into a family situation very well. It is best that you research your breed of choice thoroughly before contacting a breeder.
