The delightful Havanese is sometimes overlooked when people think of small dog breeds. This is surprising, because these dogs are affectionate, playful, gentle and clever. What's not to love?

The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and the only breed native to that country. The breed is now rare in Cuba, but continues to gain popularity in the US. In fact, according to the Havanese Club of America, "The interest in obtaining a Havanese from a breeder that does all the health testing exceeds availability. It is possible that a person may have a wait of six months to two years to obtain the 'right' one for them." If you decide to get a Havanese, you should definitely choose a responsible breeder. Don't want to wait? Consider contacting a Havanese rescue group near you.

Want to know what makes this breed so sought after? Learn more about the Havanese and decide if this is the dog for you. Are you a lover of the Havanese? Tell us about your experiences with these lovely little dogs: share your Havanese story.
