The delightful Havanese is sometimes overlooked when people think of small dog breeds. This is surprising, because these dogs are affectionate, playful, gentle and clever. What's not to love?

The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and the only breed native to that country. The breed is now rare in Cuba, but continues to gain popularity in the US. In fact, according to the Havanese Club of America, "The interest in obtaining a Havanese from a breeder that does all the health testing exceeds availability. It is possible that a person may have a wait of six months to two years to obtain the 'right' one for them." If you decide to get a Havanese, you should definitely choose a responsible breeder. Don't want to wait? Consider contacting a Havanese rescue group near you.

Want to know what makes this breed so sought after? Learn more about the Havanese and decide if this is the dog for you. Are you a lover of the Havanese? Tell us about your experiences with these lovely little dogs: share your Havanese story.

Always- always- always provide a link to the breed rescue for the breed you feature. It is a disservice to the breed to tell about them but not tell about how many need to be rescued. Whatever your readers do they should not go to a pet store (end every article with that statement) do not go to a backyard $200 a puppy breeder, do not go to puppy store, do not buy off of the internet.
Here is the link for Havanese rescue.

Havanese dogs are really very charming. A friend told me that back in Cuba the dogs would be left to take care of wives when their husbands left for prolonged periods of time.
