bull terrier dog breed

If you were born before 1980, chances are the Bull Terrier will bring back memories of Spuds Mackenzie, the dog featured in the Budweiser commercials. Now, the breed is featured as Bullseye, the mascot for Target Stores.

Bull Terriers, sometimes called Bullies, are muscular and fearless dogs. Yet despite its tough appearance, the Bull Terrier is a playful, friendly and highly affectionate dog breed. In fact, Bullies often get along remarkably well with children. All too often, this breed (along with other "bully breeds") gets a bad rap as an aggressive dog. Actually, the Bull Terrier is typically quite friendly with people and can make a wonderful family pet. In fact, its nickname is the "kid in a dog suit."

About the Photo: Harley is a 5 year old female English Bull Terrier. She lives to play frisbee on the golf course everyday. Afterwards she sits and the pool with her frisbee to cool off...sometimes she is very muddy! She is a rough and tumble dog but she is also sweet and loving. She also has a great sense of humor and makes us laugh!

Would you believe one of these dogs followed my husband home and stayed. We never found the owners and she is a pure joy to have as a member of the family! We have had many dogs and I find this breed listens and trains the best.

My neighborhood is mostly Spanish-speaking and it seems like a lot of people raise their pit bulls for dog fighting. It’s the most tragic thing to see them walk their dogs and their ‘bullys’ are aggressively snarling at tiny chihuahuas or any other dog unlucky enough to cross their path.

Contact your local humane society if you see or know of anyone training their dog for dog fighting. According to Wikipedia “Dog fighting is unlawful in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.”

We have a bully at home and would never go to another breed, she is such a friendly, loveable dog. She’s very affectionate and loves to cuddle up and have a snooze with you. Great pets, great with children. Its unfortuate for the bad rep they sometimes get.
