There have been hundreds of films made that feature dogs, some better than others. The majority of those are geared towards family audiences and are usually funny and heartwarming. I'm one of those people who cannot get through a sentimental dog movie without shedding a few tears. On the other hand, I enjoy the humor - especially the jokes that the little ones don't get. Plus, kids love dogs, so what better movie to watch than one about dogs?
So far, the new theatrical release Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is not getting the highest ratings. Are you looking for a good dog movie to watch at home instead? With so many out there, it's hard to narrow down the best dog movies. But, I did my best to compile some of my favorites for your viewing pleasure. To simplify things, I divided them into three categories:
Go ahead, beat the heat and curl up in the comfort of your air-conditioning to watch some great dog movies. Have fun! And tell me, what are some of your favorite dog movies?

I agree with your choices of movies but you have forgotten, “White Fang” and “Rin Tin Tin”. Both are based on true stories. The second is a foreign film about an American soliers and the dog he found. It is unlike the Americaln series by the same name about a German Shepard at an American Cavalry(?) base in the wild west.
Hi Mary,
Thanks for your comment. There are so many great dog movies out there that I had to narrow the list. I am aware of both of these films, and they may be added to the list in the future (along with many other films that I omitted for now).
There are several versions of White Fang, and I believe all of them are based on the Jack London novel (which I don’t think was actually a true story). I enjoyed the book when I read it years ago, but I have never seen any of the films.
There are so many Rin Tin Tin movies that I decided not to delve into them yet. I have never seen any of the films. I do know that Rin Tin Tin was a real dog that was found by American soldiers during WWI and became a canine movie and TV star (as did many of his descendants). The story of Rin Tin Tin probably deserves its own stand-alone article. Hopefully I can do the research and write one eventually.

Umberto D (1952, Italian movie by Vittorio De Sica, available with English subtitles)
