Every year, dog breed enthusiasts look forward to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, an event that is considered by many to be one of the world's most prestigious dog shows. When it comes to purebred dogs, the WKC dog show is for the best of the best. Entry into the show is limited to dogs that are registered by the AKC and have obtained AKC Championship. For two days every February, we get to see ideal representations of each dog breed. They are the cream of the crop. In many ways, it's kind of like the Miss America pageant for dogs.

This year's Westminster was no exception. Hundreds of beautiful purebred dogs and their handlers competed for the top spot. Out of the 173 dog breeds represented, three new breeds were able to participate in the conformation trial this year: the Irish Red and White Setter, Norwegian Buhund and Pyrenean Shepherd. Though none of them won Best in Group, I'm sure it was a great experience just to compete. There are certain dog breeds that I have a soft spot for, but I'm mainly just a mutt enthusiast. That being said, I was thrilled to see the some of my favorite breeds win Best in Group. Congratulations to these group winners:

Whippet, Hound Group
Toy Poodle, Toy Group
French Bulldog, Non-sporting Group
Puli, Herding
Brittany, Sporting Group
Doberman Pinscher, Working Group
Scottish Terrier, Terrier Group

Last but not least, many congratulations to Best in Show winner "Sadie" AKA Ch. Roundtown Mercedes Of Maryscot, a Scottish Terrier. Sadie won Best of Group at Westminster in 2009 and actually entered this year's Best in Show round as the number one dog in the country.

Sadie was a fine specimen of her breed and deserved the win. I must say I am a bit prejudiced as a Scotsman and an Irishman.

I have a Newfoundland dog now, but I expect if I outlive her, it will be time for a smaller breed and a terrier might fill the bill, the Scottie, the Kerry Blue and the Soft-coated Wheaten among others.
