Best known as the film and TV character Lassie, the Collie is among the more popular dog breeds, and for good reason. These are gentle and loyal dogs that get along remarkably well with children. Sure, your Collie may not be able to tell you that someone fell in a well, but he will act as a guardian to his loved ones.
Every Collie I have known has been silently watchful, gentle and stoic under distress. Most of the Collie owners I have known will tell me that they will always have Collies. Of course, this is the case for enthusiasts of any breed. However, to me, there is something about the Collie that is remarkably noble and wise. We have had two collies. One is in heaven now, but our current Collie, Beau, was a rescue when we found him in a shelter, and he is the best dog we could have ever hoped for. He is loyal, loving, protective, kind, sensitive. He is truly a blessing to our family, and I don’t think we will ever be without a Collie if we can help it. They are the best.
I had the pleasure to have owned a Collie when my children were small. She lived to be almost 13 and is missed every day. She was the most loyal, loving, and gentle soul. We have Shelties now but the Collie will always be our first love.
I am the mama of a collie. He is the most wonderful pup. My friend who was moving out of town offered me the pup; I was a little apprehensive as I had never had a dog in my life. He is a wonderful member of the family and a watch dog. He is very sensitive and he loves the girls… young and old. I can’t take him for a quick walk because everyone wants to say hello. He gobbles up all of the attention he gets. He is very smart and always on alert! He also hosts all of the neighborhood pups in his back yard… all the pups want to stop in for a visit. Some owners say that they have difficulty passing by our house, because their pup wants to stop in for a visit. He is the life of the party.
We have three collies, two of which are rescues. They are wonderful dogs and have most certainly helped me through years of depression. When we are out and playing ball they always attract an audience – their complete focus on a toy is incredible. They are loyal, loving and are great as guard dogs as well. No-one would get into our house without me knowing!!! They are incredibly fit, need lots of exercise and mental stimulation as they are very bright. The youngest is now the biggest and the most crafty of all. No door will remain closed unless it’s locked! I wouldn’t be without them for the world and are very very good with the granddaughter aged 14 months.
My husband and I have owned Collies for about 30 years. They are the most wonderful dogs we have ever had. Kind, attentive, beautiful, easy to train, we have recommended the Collie to everyone who asks “what dog is right for our family?”
Always a good breed for children, seniors and the rest of us, they go above and beyond the aspect of family pet.
The only drawback is the extensive grooming, but owning a dog as loving as a Collie, it is well worth the effort.
My Grandmother had a pet Collie, and it was a very “cool” dog to say the least. He was a very mild tempered dog, but would never pass up an opportunity to play. I miss that pup… Unfortunately, I am having trouble remembering his name now…
