affenpinscher dog breed face As I write about dog breeds every week, I often find myself falling in love with the breeds that I never thought I'd like. Such is the case with this week's breed, the Affenpinscher. Don't get me wrong - I love all dogs, but I have never fancied my self as a "little dog person." Honestly, I am truly the mutt-loving type. That being said, I am starting to think I can see myself with an Affen.

With their cute little monkey faces and their giant personalities, Affenpinschers are quite dynamic canines. However, this breed is definitely not for everyone - be prepared to encounter a stubborn side. If you ask me, though, I think it just adds to the breed's charm. Do you agree? Tell us more about the lovable Affenpinscher, and (as always) photos are welcome!

My brother’s friend owed him money, so to repay him he gave him a tiny little puppy. He said his mom would kill him when she found out he got one of her high-dollar pups (he was a grown man!). We had that dog for years before I saw one just like it on a dog show and found out it was an Affenpinscher. We had always thought she had such a cute monkey face! Main downside to her, she was prone to developing bladder stones and had to have surgery twice for it.

My aunt had one of these, and you are right about the stubborn side. I don’t know if my aunt wasn’t a very good trainer, or if the dog is truly that stubborn, but what a mess! I’m sure there are great Affenpinschers out there, but my experience was not so good. Good luck!

Hi,
I needed a small dog to travel by plane ( from Atl – Chi)to a casting call I was atending to promote my line of Doggie Tee shirts & Apparell. A good friend let me borrow his. My mother and I fell in love with this dog. So much so that I just landed about 2 hrs ago and I am here doing research on the breed. This dog stopped traffic. EVERYBODY had to stop and talk to this dog. It was incrediable. And the whole time He was so mellow and gave out quite a few kisses. Although I had no plans of getting a 3rd dog . I’m not so sure. I want one bad.

I got my Affenpinscher as a puppy about 7 months ago and fell in love with him the moment I met him. He is such a sweet tempered dog. Yes, he remains to be just a bit stubborn, but he is so loving that it doesn’t bother me much. He is possibley the sweetest dog I have ever owned.

Looks kind of like a French Bulldog, but much fluffier.

I got my first Affen this January as a gift for myself. I am going through a divorce and lost my other two dogs last year. I bought this little dog on an impulse and she is the one of the best things I have ever done. She has an amazing personality and is so funny! She entertains herself well and rarely barks, which is unusual for a little dog. She is very stubborn, but unlike what I have read about other affens she has been the easiest dog to house train I have ever owned. Learning to walk nicely on a leash and not try to “lead” me, not that’s another story!!
