lab in grass Every January, the American Kennel Club publicly releases the previous year's breed registration statistics. It comes as no surprise that the Labrador Retriever is number one again - that makes 18 years in a row!

Check out photos and descriptions of the AKC's Top Ten Breeds of 2008. If you don't see your dog here, you can also check out the full list. Do you have one of the breeds on the list? Better yet, do you have a mix of one or more of the top breeds?

I’m surprised that chihuahuas didn’t make the list. It seems to be a very popular breed in recent years.

I agree – Chihuahuas are pretty popular! They are still pretty high up there on the list. Out of 158 AKC recognized breeds, Chis placed at #12 in 2007 and 2008.

Our family has had Irish Setters for over 25 years…No offense to my fellow dog lover but you can keep your poodles, labs, retreivers. We currently have 4 setters ranging in age from 12 yrs. old to 1 year old. They are all equally playful-limited of course by their age, all equally stubborn, carefree, very loving, that’s why I say you can keep your top 10 breeds. Go Irish

This list is a joke and does not look at all dog breeds. The AKC limits the breeds it selects for its standards. I would suggest that if you truly want to know about the characteristics of a dog breed then you should visit the UKC (United Kennel Club) website. They have many more breeds than the AKC.

Very surprised that the American Pit Bull is not in the top ten dog breeds. Rottweilers and pit bulls are the best dogs ever. We bred both breeds and all our military friends on base seemed to want one, though they are banned from base.

I agree that the chihuahua is a cute little dog and should be on this list. I think Jack Russells should be #1.

I have 2 little Jack Russells that are the most wonderful dogs ever. They are high energy dogs, but are very loving. They cuddle so sweetly.

The JR retains puppy playfulness into the later years of their lives. They are such fun.

Go greyhounds! They are sweet, gentle and in need of love and a forever home! The first few years in these dogs lives were misery. They are truly greytful for a kind and caring forever home. Consider rescuing/adopting a greyhound – will be a greyt addition to your family!! We adore ours!
