Dog Breed of the Week: Boston Terrier
Wednesday January 7, 2009
The Boston Terrier is a cheerful little dog! Smart, loyal and even-tempered, the breed is a true pleasure to be around. The Boston Terrier is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. That's no surprise, because this breed makes a great companion.
Did you know that the Boston Terrier is a true all-American dog breed? The breed originates from the crossing of an English Bulldog with a white English Terrier. The result was a dog that would eventually become known as the Boston Terrier - named for the city in which it was created.
Boston Terrier enthusiasts - tell us why you love this great dog breed. Also, consider submitting a photo for the Dogs site!

You hit it on the nose – Bostons are happy guys and unfailingly cheerful. They are also energetic. My Bowser is almost 10 years old and still delights the vet staff with his leaping ability on our visits.
I bought Bowser for my daughter, who was unable to care for him and returned him to me shortly afterwards. That turned out to be one of the most wonderful things that ever happened to me – I’ve gotten so much joy from our relationship and look forward to more.
I found my Boston in a pet shop cage. He was malnourished and extremely neglected. The first thought that went through my mind was “little man, I have absolutely no idea what manner of dog you are, but if I don’t take you home with me today, you are going to die.” So off I went with my unintended purchase and have not regretted it for one day. He is 5 years old and quite the little man
WE HAD A BOSTON NAMED SHAUNGHESSY FOR 11 YEARS AND HE WAS A GREAT PET. THEY NEED TO BE NEUTERED YOUNG AS THEY ARE VERY SUSCEPTIBLE TO TESTICULAR CANCER. THAT IS HOW OUR BOY DIED. HE WAS FUNNY FAITHFULL AND VERY LOYAL. WE STILL MISS HIM AND HIS ANTICS.
seriously? thats the best picture you could come up with??
it looks like it was taken with a cell phone. geesh.
such cute little big dogs – the picture really does them absolutely no justice.
Our Chaussé(boots in french)has the most adorable personality. She loves to play and will pick up a ball or stuffed toy and have a ball, all by herself, running about and jumping. She is a pure joy to have and so much fun.
I have a boston terrier (shetzo how ever you spell it) and she is the nicest dog I have ever had. All she wants to do is make you happy. Her name is Bella.I can not imagine my life without her.
My parents bought me a Boston Terrier when I was 4 years old. I am now 58 years old and have still continued to always have a Boston Terrier by my side. I did have a kennel at one time and had 18 Boston Terriers. But now I am down to just two. I have 2 famales named Spunky and Zoe and they are just like my own kids. It seems to me that no other breed of dog has ever matched up to be what my Boston’s are. They love me un-conditionally and they would never judge me, unlike some human friends that we all have!!!
We have a Boston Terrier that we gave to our daughter when she graduated from high school. Since she lives at home, he is all of ours. He thinks he owns the house and surrounding area. He is so lovable and is always up for a play. We tell him that he has raised my niece, nephew, and grandson, because he took such good care of them when they were babies. If they cried, he would go downstairs to the den and get my husband. My older daughter and her husband havet wo of them and his grandparents breed them. So we are a family of Boston Terrier lovers.
The Boston Terrier is a very loyal dog
I’ve read that the Boston Terrier used to be called Bull Terrier. So is this still the same breed? I’ve heard of the Bull Terrier before, or is this name now used for a different kind of breed?
Flüge USA:
Yes, they were once called American Bull Terriers or Round Heads according to the AKC:

There is a Bull Terrier, and it is a quite different breed:

We have two young Bostons, Newman and Fiona. I had no idea what great dogs Boston Terriers are. The are smart as heck and funny, loving babydolls. It’s more than likely a third fuzz will be added to the family very soon!
