New Year's Resolutions and Your Dog

Wednesday December 31, 2008
It's almost 2009 - and that means resolution time. Many of us start the new year with the best of intentions. Unfortunately, we do not always stick to our goals and just end up becoming disappointed. I just read a great article from the Veterinary Medicine Guide: Resolutions for Pets & Their People. She offers some great tips for making positive changes in your pet's life as the year begins.

As with every year - my resolution is to get more active and spend more time with my dog. She is aging, so I don't know how much time we have left. Come to think of it, I am aging, too and need to get healthier. Have you already made some New Year's resolutions involving your dog, or do you plan do to so? Vote in the poll - you can choose all answers that apply. Then, tell us about your resolutions here!

Although I already walk around 2 miles a day with my dog Rusty, I want to improve my relationship with him. He needs more advanced obedience training and socialization so I have signed us up for a class beginning later this month. He already knows basic obedience and several tricks, but he is still very excitable when we meet other people or dogs. Rusty is a great dog, but I believe he can be even better than he is if I am willing to put in the time and effort to teach him. I don’t make resolutions as a rule, however, I am making an exception this year for the sake of my dog. He is more than worth the effort.

My resolution is actually to continue as I am. Lots of walks, lots of meaty bones for the Dogs and appreciate the fact I have three great bone munchers.

I have written a post that many are now following. It will result in a much better behaved Dog in a months time.

Good resolutions are important. Keeping them even more so! I’ll add my $.02:

1. Foster a needy, homeless dog this year. It’s an amazingly rewarding experience and saves a dog from probable death.

2. Donate, either time, money or both, to worthwhile causes that help pets.

I’d like to suggest a New Year’s resolution for my dogs - or maybe even two…

I would like them to stop throwing up on the beige carpeting.

I’d also suggest that they not wake us up on Saturday mornings at 5am with their cold noses.

Too much to ask? Maybe…
