Dog Breed of the Week: German Shorthaired Pointer

Wednesday December 17, 2008
german shorthaired pointer dog breed

The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is an athletic, streamlined, medium-sized dog breed in the Sporting Group. This hard working and noble hunter is highly intelligent, extremely friendly and eager to please. The GSP has historically been a versatile hunter and gun dog, but the breed also makes an excellent companion.

Personally, I adore this breed. I love the high-energy level, positive attitude and sincere loyalty of the GSP. Plus, they are adorable! Do you have a German Shorthaired Pointer, or just love the breed? Tell us why. And don't forget - photo submissions are always welcome!

Our family love GSP very much. we have 9 altogether. They are very smart and great hunters. Can be a little active but they do calm down with some consistant discpline. Great breed

We’ve had two German Shorthaired Pointers over the years. The first one was named Jumper. She climbed trees to get eat the fruit and she loved the water so much we had to keep the bathroom door shut while filling the bathtub or else she’d jump in and dig furiously at the drain while splashing water everywhere. Our second Shorthair was Bullwinkle, because he looked like a chocolate baby moose. He was the best dog ever — loved to hunt and swim. Both were the sweetest natured animals and gave back twice as much love as they got. German Shorthaired Pointers are the cutest puppies ever and then grow into a very handsome, noble looking dog. They love everyone and everyone loves them. Just plain funny, too.

We’ve had two German Shorthaired Pointers over the years. The first one was named Jumper. We had a large pear tree in our yard. She used to climb the tree to get the pears and would then play with them like a ball for hours. We have to Pointers Sir Nelson and Mollie Girl. They are wonderful and have so much love to give. They love to go on long runs and jump in the lake chasing ducks that never quite let the dogs catch them. It’s hysterical. Most of all they love to cuddle on the couch and curl up next to you. At times I have to remind them that they are two big to be lap dogs:-)

We have 2 GSPS, Bella and Daisy–both very loving animals. Bella is 2.5 years old , and is our tree climber. Problem is, she will get too high, and get stuck up in our blue spruce! She had quite a landing this evening, and I’m glad that she didn’t break anything. She can also be quite a whiner in the house–as though she sees a ghost. Anyone familiar with this trait?

Oh my! I have a GSP who is 10 months old and whines all the time. He is so lovable and loves to climb on laps even though he weighs 80 pounds already! He is a sweetheart, he jumps on people, gets into the garbage and doesn’t come when I call him. He is a puppy, but all my friends are so frustrated with how disobediant he is. Any help?

We have a GSP that was our daughter’s before she moved into an apartment. GSPs are obviously not good apartment dogs. Our GSP is named Wyatt, and even though he is 7+ years old, he thinks he is still a puppy. I call him the class clown of the dog world.
