Charitable Giving for Animal Lovers

Tuesday December 16, 2008
The holiday season is a time of giving. Many of us find it in our hearts to donate to worthy causes all year, but the holiday season is a great time to donate, too. Charity donations can also make beautiful gifts for friends and family with causes close to their hearts. Consider making a donation in the name of a loved one - it shows how much you care.

As a dog lover, you may wish to support an animal-related cause. One great way is through monetary donations, but remember that volunteering your time to help animals is just as important. If you want to volunteer your time, visit your local animal shelter or rescue group to see what you can do. You may even consider fostering a dog if that is the right choice for your lifestyle.

If you wish to make a donation to a national animal organization, here a few to consider:

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
The Humane Society of the United States
Petfinder.com Foundation
Guide Dogs for the Blind
Assistance Dogs of America
National Canine Cancer Foundation
The Pet Fund

I am also a big fan of supporting small, local animal charities (as long as they are reputable). Check out your own city's animal welfare and rescue groups for ideas!

While I am a member of the ASPCA, my major donation for Christmas will go to McKennel’s Animal Adoption Agency in Rumford.
It’s the local “pound” but clean and happy, so much so I pay to board my Newfoundland dog when I have to go out of town. And my dog, Maeve, loves it. It’s like a vacation. But sadly, some of the puppies and kitties don’t find new homes, so I give enough for a couple or three large bags of food.
