Dog Breed of the Week: Pomeranian

Wednesday December 10, 2008
pomeranian dog breed close up The Pomeranian looks like a cross between a stuffed animal and a tiny lion. Its distinct long, fluffy coat and bright personality make this an unforgettable dog breed. Poms are energetic and sometimes bossy little dogs with an intense loyalty for their loved ones. In the veterinary world, I have come across more than a few Poms who would not even let me get near their "parent." Owners of Poms need to take special care to ensure that their dogs do not gain the upper hand. This may be easier said that done, though. It's not easy to say no to that adorable smiling ball of fluff!

If you are the proud owner of a Pomeranian, then you know what I mean. These are precious dogs, but they are not for everyone. Poms are great for people who want a little lap dog that also has the energy to run and play, plus a bit of strong-willed spirit. What about your Pom? What makes him or her special to you? Also - remember that I am always looking for pictures to add to future photo galleries - consider submitting yours!

I’ve been a Pommie Mommie for several years. I can’t help but think if a Pom were as big as their heart, they’d be the size of a house. They can be a lot of work with the grooming and all, and the vacuum cleaner at my house screams in panic! Or is that just because its about worn out? I’ve had one Pom, and as many as six. I din’t think there has been a quiet moment at home in a very long time. And if it does get quite, its like the mother of a toddler, better go see why. Sure enough… they’re into something! I’ve heard it said that a Pom is like a perpetual 6-year-old. I believe it. When they’re young, they have unending energy. When they get elderly they have a calm and regal elegance.
They’re my fuzzkids.

I would love to say how much I love my little Pom-Po… she is such a charatcter… there are 3 of us living here and we each have our special time with her… Kalli loves attention… loves to play… & yes, is very smart to remember where her toys are… now we are getting ready to teach her to put her toys away.. that should prove interesting.. one question I do have… what is the best dry food for her?.. she tends to eat the cats food.. she will eat the canned Mighty Dog Chicken… but I don’t want to give her canned food too much… only once a day…I need to know what kind of dry puppy food to get… I have tried 3 different kinds and none have worked… she insists on the cats food…

Try Blue Bufflo dog food its the greatest holistic food there is. My dogs wolf it down so fast I always have to check w/my husband to make sure he fed them in the am… I’ve never in my 40 yrs of dogs seen such a love for dry food.

Of all the dogs of the week you have not chosen a hunting or working dog. Get real, these are the dogs people prefer.

Thanks for posting, Walter. I see where you are coming from, but perhaps you have missed some previous posts. My dog breed of the week choice is generally based upon the most popular dogs breeds according to the AKC: http://www.akc.org/reg/dogreg_stats.cfm

I’m going down the list, but not in exact order. Sorry if you missed these, but I actually have featured several dogs from the working and sporting groups:

One year ago I adopted a Pom. She was six years old and had been raised in a puppy mill. She is so sweet and has quite a personality but has so many emotional problems. I have never had a dog quite like her and would love to know if there are any training books out there to teach us, who are brave enough to adopt a puppy mill dog, how to work with them.

I have a beautiful black and white Pom. Her name is Prissy. She is the sweetest dog on the planet. I got her at a swapmeet for $150.00. My husband (who didn’t previously like pets)and I think she is the best $150.00 we ever spent. She has never had any behavior problems. I have heard so many people say little dogs have to be on your lap or next to you NOT SO with her. She loves her pets and affection but only in small doses. I don’t think there could be a better or more loved dog than she is.

(8) BRos says:

We purchased a 4-month-old all black Pom who had spent most of her life in a crate. Once she realized she had a fenced yard and wasn’t going to be crated day and night, she settled down, but at first we thought we’d acquired a wild squirrel. She is energetic, very bright, empties her toy basket one item at a time, and exhausts our other two dogs trying to get them to play all day.

5-7 lbs for a Pomeranian? We must have a throw-back, because she weighed 19.8 pounds at the vet this week and is 13 1/2″ at the shoulder. She’s 10 months old. She has papers and I’ve spoken with the breeder to let her know. We had her spayed and had no interest in breeding anyway. Has anyone else had a “giant” Pom?

This is the name of the lady who bred the female all black Pom we have who weighed 19.8 pounds at 10 months. She’s the size of a Sheltie. The sire was black and tan, dam was all black.

(12) Lauren says:

I’ve always had large dogs, but now I live somewhere that only allows small dogs. When I say “small” she seems small to me, but at 24 lbs. she is quite large for a pommie! I adopted her a year ago~ a rescue group saved her from being euthanized, brought her up to the area I live in, I saw her on Petfinder.com & fell in love with her. She was so abused by her previous owner, that it has been a lot of work just to gain some of her trust. She still cries & whimpers in her sleep sometimes, & whenever I think of the abuse she went through it just breaks my heart. I just don’t understand people who would hurt an innocent animal. Why even have a dog? She also has several health issues, the worst being a collapsing trachea, which being tied up outside night & day did nothing to help. Even with all the “baggage” she came with, I wouldn’t do anything differently. I made a promise to her that I would give her the best life that I could possibly give her, & that she would be safe & loved for the rest of her life. At 10 yrs old (the vet’s guesstimate) they don’t feel she has much longer, but I love her with all my heart. She has a place in my heart that no other dog could ever fill, & when she crosses over I don’t know what I’ll do without her. She has truly been a blessing. (I wish I could post a picture)
