Who Will Be The Presidential Puppy?
I am certain that the Obama family has done plenty of research about what types of dogs are best for kids. It also seems that their choices are limited due to the girls' allergies. Thousands of people voted for the Obama family's future dog through the AKC - and the winner was the Poodle. Personally, I think some other good choices include the Portuguese Water Dog and Bichon Frise. If Malia's allergies can take it, I would love to see them rescue a mutt! Whatever their choice may be, I wish them the best of luck raising the new puppy. I can't wait to see what kind of dog they choose!

Dear Obama’s:
As a devoted dog lover I have had many over the years and often two at a time. My latest love is a miniature poodle and she is the best of the bunch! She is smart, sassy, cuddly, loving and a great size. If this is your choice you will definitely enjoy. Maybe you should consider a set - one for each girl.
Best of luck..a poodle lover and Obama supporter.
Being a dog lover myself, I hope that the Obama’s make an informed decision about their choice of puppies, and I hope even more that they rescue a pup! There are so many little babies out there in need of a good home, and we all know about the perils of puppy mills. Please, please, please rescue! I have a labrador/german shepherd that I rescued 3 years ago and he is the best dog I could ever dream of.
I vote for water dog!
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Actually would hate to see it get popular but there a now so many homeless ones that this would prove a stellar dog for the job.
I think it will be a pitbull called Sarah.
My vote is for a Boxer.
I was raised with one as a child, and when our family was able, adopted one. She once put herself between our youngest and herself.
If the Obama family wants a rescue, just search Boxer Rescue
I am really hoping that they choose to adopt. What a statement that would make!!
I have adopted dogs, cats and horses, even though I have moderate allergies and asthma. I control the allergies with inhalers, an antihistamine and injections, and love the animals! However, I think that if the Obamas are able to get a good hypoallergenic dog from a breed rescue organization, that would be ideal.
I was so happy to hear Obama say “our preference would be to get a shelter dog,” this is great news! I am sure they can find a hypoallergenic dog from a shelter or rescue.
What a great example to set for the world - maybe it will prompt more people to think about adopting from shelters or rescues!
As the proud owner of 5 wonderful Basset Hounds, I think they should consider a rescued Basset Hound. They are a wonderful breed, loyal, and they love children!
I have a bichon and they should get one to!!
Look into a PUG. We picked one up about 18 weeks ago, and she is the BEST pet I’ve ever had. We brought her home when she was only 8 weeks old. If you’re looking for a good, loving, playful, LOYAL dog, that will stay with you constantly then this is the pet for your girls. I like the pugs because if you get the right one, they stay small….GOOD LUCK.
As the parent of a child with allergies, I do hope they select a “non-allergenic” type of dog. Especially, one that can be clipped short and bathed often to keep any allergies at bay. We have had good luck with mixed breeds such as a Shih-Poo and a Malti-Poo. If the Obama’s search well, I’m sure they may even find a non-allergen dog at a shelter. Petfinder.com is a good place to start their search. Good luck to President Elect Obama and his family!
P.S. I hope all the people who didn’t want to vote for Obama because they thought he didn’t like dogs now realize how wrong they were. Like a good parent, he was being careful with his children’s health.
Labradoodle!!! These dogs are non-shedding (Poodle genes), great with kids (Labrador retriever genes)and so easy to train as they are very, very smart (Poodle and Lab traits). They come in three sizes and lots of different colours. Purchased from a LEGITIMATE BREEDER, this dog would be a smart choice for the First Family. An awesome breed!
I love dogs!! I can’t have them in my building, but I make it a point to get to know the neighbor dogs. I saw a thing on animal planet today about Bichon Frise. The Obama girls would love this dog.Congratulations,Sir,and soon to be Mr.President.God’s Blessings on you forever
My vote is for a miniature schnauzer. They are hypo allergenic, fun, friendly, and great with kids. They’re also pretty regal looking so they would fit in with the environment. There are plenty of good schnauzers out in shelters to adopt, so I would hope that they would choose to adopt. I have had schnazuers all my live and they are just the most loving little creatures, and they do enjoy being with the family.
I just got a havanese and I think that they are just wonderful. I can’t imagine the young ladies finding a softer bundle of joy anywhere else. My vote is for the havanese.
What a wonderful sight it will be to see not only a very lucky dog, but two adorable kids running and playing on the White House lawn. It’s been long overdue! I hope the Obama family rescues a dog. I have three; two mixes from a shelter and just got a new one from a rescue-a mini doxie, Scarlett. A 70 and 60 pounder and an 8 pounder. What a riot! The new Obama addition will make for some very happy times, as all dogs do.
Who cares!!
I agree with “who cares?” Does anyone care what kinda dog Putin or Medved have? Only in the US and the “mother country” of Brits is the family dog an icon.
Why “do people care about what breed the Obama’s” pick? Because everyone knows that how you take care of a pet, reflects responsibility, integrity, compassion and a great love for creatures other than humans! I have known all along that the Obama’s had these qualities. All of them. And yes, what a message to the U.S. that it pays off to be thoughtful in one’s choice when getting a pet, so both the owner and the fur-baby will be happier. I couldn’t myself be happier than Obama winning! And for those who don’t like him, TOO BAD FOR YOU, lol…Life was horrible when we had the last two Presidents ruling the states. Finally, we can breathe again.
Any kind of hypoallergenic dog from the shelter would show people that wonderful pets don’t have to be purebreds (both of my dogs are from shelters/rescue & they are the best dogs I ever owned (I mean they “own me”). If they were to get a dog from a rescue group it would be a purebred but would also be setting a good example for the American public. I wish the Obama family the best of luck in this decision & congratulations to President-Elect Obama..I’m sure he will make this country proud!
I would recommend an adult dog, not a puppy. The White House is not a great environment, in my opinion, for novice dog owners to train a pup. As for a breed, I would recommend a standard poodle, with a working clip. They are bright, pleasant dogs. It would set a great example if the Obama family adopted their quadriped.
The Obamas need to get and Enlish Bulldog. Why? Because the are great dogs and symbolize everything great in this country. Oh yeah, and they are very cute puppies.
i wouls get a
dashound/doxen they are ther same thing
