Dog Breed of the Week: Beagle
The Beagle is an energetic, free-spirited dog with a friendly demeanor. It's no wonder the Beagle is one of the most popular dog breeds around - this hound is well-rounded and versatile. Many Beagles can go from couch potato to running partner in seconds! Though still often used in hunting, the Beagle is more commonly known as a lovable family pet - often considered one of the best dogs for kids.
Perhaps the popularity of the Beagle is related to the well-know Beagles over the years. From the character of Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon to Uno, the first Beagle to ever win best in show at the Westminster Dog Show in 2008, the Beagle is a memorable breed. Any Beagle owner will tell you about this bright and cheery breed. Share your perspective here!

Beagles are great. We have a rescue and she makes us laugh multiple times a day. At the Westminster Dog Show they describe beagles as “jolly” dogs and that is exactly right. I read Beagle adoption stories on the web all the time and it is not unusual to read the sad story of a rescued beagle that ends “could stand to lose some weight”. That’s a beagle for you, if there is any food in the same zip code they’ll find it.
I used to have a beagle when I was a kid. They are great dogs for kids. They are good natured, have plenty of energy for the little ones, and they are adorable. Beagles love to relax when they are indoors and they are very loyal. They are great comedians, and you can’t help but love those long floppy ears. I especially like the 13 inch Beagle which is the smaller of the breed.
Beagles are the best! We have 2 13″ beagles. You can have a hard day and come home and they are always happy ot see you. Joyous in fact!
Oh the BEAGLE! What a wonderful addition to the human race! We have 7 right now, but have had 20-30 over the years. They are ALL fun and “jolly” and spoiled to death! Ours do hunt but they are so spoiled they come right home after the hunt and go right to their houses and wait for dinner. When they all get cranked up tho — it’s like a choir in our yard! LOVE ‘EM!
I absolutely adore my girls!!! I’ve had many beagles and lots of other breeds. There are 3 favs in my family and my beagle girl is my #1.
My Bubba is my widdle boy. He is the most hysterical Beagle of the bunch. He he always happy to see me and he loves my nieces to death. he alwas has a “sob story” for anyone who will listen and pay attention to him and food is his favorite pasttime. I love how “happy” this breed is. Their tails never stop wagging. IF only the human race could be as content and happy to be alive!!!
We have a Beagle Sammy. He is a great dog. Loves kids and very gentle. Beagles are great dogs.
I was raised with poodles, and my first dog as an adult was a cocker spaniel. After 16 years with her, my son convinced me with the use of beagle puppy pictures that our next dog should be a beagle. Gracie has been a wonderful addition to our family. She has so many of the “Snoopy” characteristics. She’s six years old, and it’s taken constant attention to help her keep her weight down to her 22 pounds (yes, she has a waist!) I can’t think of a happier dog than our lil’ Gracie!
We have a beagle named Lila. She’s a rescue too and she seemed stuck on us when we went to look at her. She is so friendly, she just loves it when company comes over. She likes to sit up on her haunches and she does it all the time. My husband’s nephew came over one day and she just sat there on her haunches looking up at him-it was so cute! She likes to be part of the family. Yes she has the bad habit of getting away from us and running through the neighborhood and across a highway-yikes! One day when she was running she rode the school bus to where a girl thought she belonged. We ended up having to go get her but I will never forget that story and it is amazing how so many people worked together that day to get her where she belonged.
Scrappy is her name and playing and loven is what she does most. She is definatly a lap dog. She loves to go in the car, but then thinks she should be on my lap.She is great with kids, she loves everyone.
I definitely agree with you Jenna. I believe that beagles are the best pet to have. They are loving and caring. I used to have a beagle named Skibo, but he died. I felt so sad because he meant everything to me and I loved him. He used to be energetic one minute and lazy the next. I would recommend anyone looking for a dog to get a beagle. Their kindness can fill you heart with joy!
