The Incredible Dachshund
Sunday August 17, 2008
I must admit it, years ago I was not a big fan of Dachshunds. First, I had a neighbor with an obsessively barking Doxie. Then, my first dog bite after I became a vet tech was from a wiener dog. Plus, I thought they looked funny. Later in my career, I began to work more closely with Dachshunds and absolutely fell in love with them. Folks, I can tell you that my next dog will come from Dachshund rescue - I'm a weenie convert!
Once you spend some time with Dachshunds, it becomes hard to resist those short little legs, giant personalities and adorable faces. Now, it's time to hear from you. Please, tell us all about your precious little Doxies!

Dachshunds are delightful dogs. We got a male doxie puppy 4 1/2 years ago. Two months ago, we rescued a 6 year old female from a home that was breaking up. She is a little too barkie, but the most loving little girl you could find. Our two doxies are now best of friends, and we love them to death.
We just recently got a miniature dachshund and she is a delightful little cutie pie. She is a short hair, 12 weeks old and red in color. Still learning potty training, but working on it. She is loads of fun. Got us a doxie book and learning so much and having loads of fun.
I have 3 dachshunds. A black/tan male standard we got at 10 months old, is now 9 years, 2 (1) brown (1) red female minis 8 and 9 years old. The male, BT is very protective, he also loves to hunt and has several kills under his belt, the girls always back him up. I love them dearly and if they weren’t there when my husband died in 2004 I would have not been able to keep going with life. They are the best nurses, and never let me mope for very long. They are spoiled rotten and as long as I feed them, give them treats, and cater to their every whim I can live in their house and sleep in the bed with them. I recommend that everyone get and read Dachshunds for Dummies, it will give you a lot of insight of your dachshund’s thinking and behavior.
I love dachshies… If I could I would have a hundred of them. They are all fiesty little bundles of ingenuity. Smart and loving.
I also am mini doxie convert! I got my little davey ( mini doxie) from our local spca. We got him after we lost our much loved cockerpoo of 16 1/2 years. Davey has brought so much love and happiness to us. Your right when you stated all you have to look into their face and you know you are loved. We kickout of his litte feet and legs. He is a little power house.
I love my half doxie, half chiuahuah, she is a mighty dog thats for sure, not yappy in the least and she has such a great personality and sense of humor. My chaweenie rocks!
Had a Pug loved him lost him Got a Mini Dachshund and was the best thing I ever did. Most loving cute dog I have ever owned. If you ever stay around one for more than a day you will go get one for yourself.
we have 3 doxie’s. One we bought when he was 4 1/2 weeks old. Loves everybody. 2nd we got from people that had to get rid of him. Don’t know why, he’s a good hand full. 3rd we got from a doxie rescue. She’s my little spitfire. They are my babies. My 2 legged baby is almost 17. The four legged babies are 4,6,4.. But they are still babies.. They play and pick on eachother just like kids. example, the other night, 2 of them played toy keep away from the loveable one. No joke. Doxie’s are the best dogs to own. When you have more than one you are never bored. They entertain you more than a movie. We think 2 of them have a secret love for eachother. They act like they can’t stand eachother then they start playing, hugging, dance around eachother. It’s great fun. High to all doxie lovers…
I have 2 mini long-hair black & tans. 1 male that is 13 years old(he doesn’t know it) and 1 female that is 6 years old. They are the best babies in the world. So loving and sunggles all the time. They are good with children but are very protective. I have to watch my Fifi when anyone gets near me. Joey, most of the time could care less, I even take him to the nursing home to visit the residents. If you don’t own a doxie, you should be ashamed of yourself!
They are amazing little dogs aren’t they? You would never even know that they were bred to take down badgers.
My gentleman friend has a little dashound. He’s so Sweet! He is so spoiled that I had to take him to the hospital to see his master today!
my female red mini is 9 y/o and hasnt slowed down yet!!!i take her every where i can with me, and all the states she has been in are written on her traveling kennel===yes she is a barker but only when she is tangled up, or doing back up for her {brother and sister{2 labadores!!!she slleps with me and is the original bed hog–i used to breed daschounds, and i would not have any other breed—–
I have a 4 yr old chaweenie named Maggie. She is the cutest and sweetest thing I have ever seen. I have 3 children who she thinks are hers, and she is right.
These kinds of dog are really good for hunting rabbits because of their size. They come in diverse size: kaninchen, miniature and standard. The coat, color and weighs are different too. They have been the figure of Germany because political cartoonists use it to laugh at Germany.

I have always had larger dogs…. I decided that I wanted a smaller dog that I could travel with etc… A friend of ours had a mini doxie, and that dog really took to me. So… I decided that this would be the dog for me. IT IS!!!!! I got a mini longhaired silver dapple doxie. What a love!!! She is sooooo cool. She is a Therapy dog. I take her to hospitals, convalesant homes and into my elementary classroom. She also goes to the public library so that the kids can read to her. She is AMAZING!!!!!
OH MY — what to say about my Jackson Dachshund!!! I was visiting my sister in SC where he was next door all alone most of the time and barking constantly. It was UNBEARABLE for me b/c I had 15 dogs at the time and really would have been in hot water with my husband had I brought another dog home. The next year Jaki-Dacki was STILL there and still sad and lonely and that was it for me. I took him from the people and he is my JOY. He is red/brown dapple and is camouflaged. We live on 40 acres and you cannot spot him in the woods in the fall/winter. We still have 10 dogs but HE rules the roost. I ADORE my baby. He still barks A LOT and it’s annoying but he loves his “mother” most of all. I will NEVER regret bringing him 9 hours HOME!

I am too a Dacshund fan…My Lexi is now 2 1/2 she is a mini and I consider her my daughter…that is how she is introduced to people….she LOVEEEESS people and FOOD…I have always been a fan and she is made me even more by her being in our lives….She brings me more joy than any other thing or person (other than my son)has ever done!!
MY DOXIE HAD BACK SURGERY 15 MONTHS AGO. THANKFULLY SHE IS WALKING AND RUNNING NOW. SHE LOVES TO PLAY WITH OUR JACK RUSSELL. OUR ONLY CONCERN IS SHE HASN’T GOTTEN CONTROL OF HER DEFECATION. WE CALL IT “DROPPING A NUGGET”. SHE WILL BE LAYING THERE AND OUT ONE COMES. SHE MAY BARK AND OUT ONE COMES. ANY SUGGESTIONS FROM ANYONE? HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND OVERCOME IT.
We rescued our little Rocky a year ago - he is a miniature, short-haired, red bundle of joy. At first I thought he will pee all over the house and smell. Well, guess what? Little Rocky is litter trained - we use the small wooden pellets that you use in wood burners. Very cheap - 40# for $4.00 at Tractor Supply. We put a pee pad under his litter box (which is a specialdog litter box from PetSmart) just in case he misses or is just in a hurry to get in the box. He loves his box and always uses it - no accidents in our house! After having him for over a year I am so in love with this little guy. He follows me around instead of my husband. He lays on my lap instead of my husbands and he loves to ride in the car. His biggest downfall is his barking at the doorbell and at any animal he sees on TV. He is an avid TV watcher. Just when you think he is asleep on your lap - he barks at the animal on TV. Doesn’t matter what it is either - dog, cat, pig, horse, cow -whatever. He jumps down and runs around the coffee table. We just don’t know what to do about his barking - it is LOUD. We just purchased health insurance for him since they are prone to back problems.
Ijust have to put my 16. years and 8 month little female dashound to sleep, I miss her a lot it just happen 24 hours ago.
She was my little angel.
Adopt or Foster a Dachshund from AADR. You won’t regret it!
We have 2 long haired standard dashounds, Vinny is the red with blond highlights boy and his sister is Violet she is a real long haired black/tan. We had pick of the litter almost 6 years ago. There were 6 altogether, I picked out Vinny becaues out of all 6 he was the only on who know i picked him up and kissed me, now he is the kisser!! My husband picked Violet because she was the first puppy to come and see who was there. We wanted all 6 but could not afford them!!!
We love our dashounds to death and cannot imagine life without them! They are very funloving playful. The also have a wonderful time playing with their black cat brogher Velvet! They have very opposite personalities Vinny is the high strung one and Violet is shy and mellow.
We recommend everybody gets a longhaired dashound!
I have six wieners…I just love them so much.
