It's no secret that most dogs love to eat. Many dogs will eat whatever is in front of them, whether or not it's actually edible. I'm sure we've all known a "canine vacuum cleaner" at one point. Some dogs are more discerning, preferring a special flavor or texture. Either way, dogs are not thinking about the nutritional value of the food they eat, they're interested in flavor and filling their bellies.

As dog "parents," we have a responsibility to our dogs to keep them safe and healthy. Part of this means choosing a quality diet. Our dogs might beg for table scraps, but we know that they deserve better. Tons of healthy dog treats are available as an alternative to table scraps or "junk food." You may not be able to explain to your dog why he can't finish off your dinner plate, but it's worth it to know you're giving him the best food for his health.

Part of choosing a quality diet for your dog or cat is also knowing what exactly is going into the make-up of the food. As we have all seen to tragic consequences, the regulations governing the ingredients used in pet food are not enough. And the legal paths we as owners are left with are not enough. Unless you know exactly what is going into a food, would you eat it? Would you allow your 2 legged children to eat it?
I agree that table scraps are not the answer, but “people” food is not wrong. We started cooking for our dogs using only human grade ingredients. The turn around in the “life” of our 10 year old border collie is amazing! He has had more energy, less stiffness after a run, and a far better appetite since we tossed the kibble and mom learned to cook for them! My super picky 4 year old border cross now loves dinner time as well!
Not everyone has the time to do this (yet I, a person who was not sure which room housed the stove, can cook for them…..), but better research of what we are feeding our pets, would be a great place to start.
